Equities Sector Coverage: Wall Street Inches Up As Investors Watch Europe
The Nonmanufacturing ISM index came in at 53.7 in May, above expectations, but the employment component fell to 50.8 questioning job creation. The Dow Jones Industrial Average traded down to 12,072.17 then up to 12,140.59 going into the final half hour of trading, staying well below its 200-day simple moving average at 12,263. The NASDAQ traded down to 2749.34 then up to 2780.99 trading on both sides of its 200-day simple moving average at 2761. Asian stocks had a modest recovery on Tuesday. Equities Sector Coverage: Stocks Continue to Break Lower
CPI was flat in April, up 0.2% excluding food and energy. Retail Sales rose just 0.1% in April with and without autos. After a Dip in April, the NAHB Home Builder Index jumped 5 points to 29 in May. The Dow Jones Industrial Average traded down to 12,672.80 on Tuesday then up to 12,758.43 then plunged to 12,608.16 into the final half hour of trading. Equities Sector Coverage: Stocks Rebound as May Starts Off in Green
Construction Spending in March was weaker than expected with a rise of just 0.1%. The ISM manufacturing index was stronger than expected in April at 54.8. The Dow Jones Industrial Average traded down to 13,174.65 then rebounded to 13,338.66 taking out the March 16th high at 13,289.08. The NASDAQ’s traded down to 3041.62 then rebounded to 3085.40 staying below it’s March 27th high at 3134.17. Asian stocks were mixed on Tuesday. Initial Jobless Claims rose to 388,000 moving further above the 350,000 recessionary threshold. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rallied to a day’s high at 13,227.82 going into the final half hour of trading above its 50-day simple moving average at 13,027. Equities Sector Coverage: Wall Street Trades Higher as Investors Remain Optimistic
The Dow Jones Industrial Average traded down to 12,782.57 then traded above 12,900 going into the final hour of trading, which was above its May 2nd 2011 high at 12,876.00. The NASDAQ opened below 2900 on Tuesday but then rebounded to 2910.27. The S&P 500, Dow Transports and Russell 2000 still lag their 2011 highs at 1370.58, 5627.85 and 868.57 respectively. Initial Jobless Claims fell to 367,000 but remain above the 350,000 recessionary threshold. Nonfarm Productivity rose 0.7% in the 4th quarter 2011 with Unit Labor Costs up 1.2%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average opened slightly higher at 12,741.89 then dipped to 12,676.05 staying below its May 2nd 2011 high at 12,876.00. Equities Sector Coverage: Stocks Overcome Early Drop to End Flat
ADP reported that the private sector added 325,000 jobs in December. Initial Jobless Claims fell to 372,000 last week still above the recessionary threshold of 350,000. Non-manufacturing ISM came in below expectations at 52.6 with the employment component at 49.4, which is a sign that the services industries are not creating jobs. The Dow Jones Industrial Average opened lower trading down to 12,283.90 then rebounded to an afternoon high above 12,435. The NASDAQ traded down from 2647.52 to 2631.23 then rebounded to 2673.56 above its 200-day simple moving average at 2660. Housing Starts data showed a better-than-expected rise of 9.3% in November to an annual rate of 685,000 units. Permits rose by 5.7% to a 681,000 unit rate.
