Equities Sector Coverage: Stocks Pare Gains As Fed Defends QE Infinity

Construction Spending was down 0.6% in August the largest drop since July 2011. ISM Manufacturing index came in at 51.5 in September, which was better than expected. The Dow Jones Industrial Average traded up to 13,598.25 Monday morning on the stronger than expected ISM data then consolidated in the afternoon. The NASDAQ traded up to 3146.99 Monday morning then traded into the red in the afternoon with a day’s low at 3103.89 going into the final half hour of trading. In Asian, the Nikkei 225 ended the day at 8,797 – down 0.83%. The Hang Seng was on holiday at 20,840. European exchanges traded higher on Monday. The FTSE 100 ended the day at 5,820 – up 1.37%. Equities Sector Coverage: Stocks Pare Losses After Late Push

The Dow Jones Industrial Average traded down to 13,521.68 in morning trading then rebounded into the green with an afternoon high at 13,601.90 going into the last half hour of trading. The NASDAQ traded down to 3150.94 in morning trading then rebounded to 3167.74 in the afternoon, but stayed in the red. The DJIA is considering changes to the way the iconic index is calculated in order to be able to include Apple (AAPL) without it holding too much sway. Asian stocks traded lower on Monday. Equities Sector Coverage: Stocks Inch Higher on Housing Boost

Housing Starts rose a less than expected 2.3% to 750,000 units annualized in August. Building Permits fell by 1.0%. Existing Home Sales rose 7.8% in August to an annual rate of 4.82 million, the highest level since May 2010. The Dow Jones Industrial Average traded up to 13,586.35, dipped to 13,556.74 then rallied to 13,626.48 in afternoon trading. The NASDAQ traded up to 3179.33, dipped to 3172.29 then rallied to 3189.35 in afternoon trading. Asian stocks surged on Wednesday after the Bank of Japan increased their version of quantitative easing. The Nikkei 225 ended the day at 9,232 – up 1.19%. The NY Fed Empire State Survey declined to a weaker than expected reading of -10.41 in September.  The Dow Jones Industrial Average traded down to 13,526.83 going into the final half hour of trading on Monday with the NASDAQ down to 3168.63. Equities Sector Coverage: Markets Get a Boost from Bernanke

Initial Jobless Claims rose more than expected to 382,000 well above the 350,000 recessionary threshold. The Producer Price Index rose to 1.7% in August boosted by energy costs. Core PPI was up 0.2% in August vs 0.4% in July. The FOMC announced that QE3 would be a program to buy $40 billion mortgage-backed securities each month in an open-ended program. Operation Twist will continue until year end. The proceeds from maturing agencies and MBS will continue to be re-invested. Combined Twist and MBS will total $85 billion a month until year end. Keeping the federal funds at zero to 0.25% will be extended into mid-2015. The US Trade Deficit widened to a less than expected $42.0 billion in July from $41.9 billion in June. The Dow Jones Industrial Average traded up to a day’s high at 13,354.34. Non-Farm Payrolls rose by a less than expected 96,000. The Unemployment rate dropped to 8.1% from 8.3%, as 368,000 people left the labor force. The labor force participation rate fell to 63.5% the lowest since September 1981.  The Dow Jones Industrial Average traded between 13,266.22 and 13,320.27 on Friday. Initial Jobless Claims fell 12,000 to 365,000 still above the 350,000 recessionary threshold. Non-manufacturing ISM came in at 53.7 in August, just above expectations. The Dow Jones Industrial Average spiked higher at the open trading up to a day’s high at 13,291.38, which is shy of the year to date high at 13,336.66 set on May 1st.
